The most important monument is the Cathedral dedicated to Sant' Andrea, with the dramatic staircase made of 57 steps descending into the piazza. Amalfi is the dream destination of many couples to celebrate their wedding.
The Cathedral dates back to the year 1000 but it has undergone several changes in the following centuries and now it has a typical baroque structure. The intricately painted ceilings, by Andrea d’Aste, represent Sant' Andrea’s flagellation, the miracle of manna, his crucifixion and his setting up on the cross. The mortal remains of Sant' Andrea are kept in the crypt below the Cathedral.
